“A Flower among the crazies”

Wilsall, MT - 2020

This is without a doubt one of the most thrilling photographs I have ever taken. I have tried for years to capture this exact moment in which the full moon breaches the horizon with an interesting subject in the foreground, but have failed time and time again. It’s truly equal parts calculation and luck. Whether that be clouds, smoke, or miscalculating the fleeting moment and place at which the moon breaks the surface of the horizon. Wherever you are, you must be ready, and you better be lucky.

I finally got the shot on May 7th of 2020. The Flower super moon in the Crazy Mountain range—I just love the juxtaposition of those words. The pines you see between our vantage point and the moon are over 3 miles away, nestled into the sharp embankment of Sunlight Peak, cutting the moon in half.

I’ll never forget shouting in jubilance into the vast timber with nobody to hear me for miles and miles.
