“Sunset Buffalo”
Yellowstone National Park, 2020
Bison (or buffalo) are the largest land animal in the US. They are historically intertwined with Native Americans, both spiritually and conventionally, in providing food, clothing, etc. Yellowstone National Park (aka “YNP”) is the only place in the U.S. where buffalo (or bison) have sustainably lived since the beginning of time and where they comprise the nation’s largest population on public land. Since 1992, the Inter Tribal Buffalo Council has worked with YNP to transfer bison to Tribal Lands. These are treasured animals that speak to our cultural history and they have faced devastating diseases such as brucellosis. Besides humans, wolves and bear are their predominant predators.
These wonderful, but scary, creatures can move at 35MPH and at 2,000lbs they can be fatal in human contact. If you visit YNP or see buffalo anywhere, please listen to the rules of the park by staying at least 25 yards away.
If you are curious about how Plains Indians hunted and killed these great animals—originating thousands of years ago—I recommend reading this NPS article (link here).
